Tick-box digital credentials are more common than you think. Many Boards claim to have “digital expertise” because one member worked for a tech firm, even if they never touched the technology.
A superficial approach to digital literacy is becoming increasingly dangerous. Real digital fluency is a genuine understanding of how technology is affecting the strategy. As one expert put it, if it’s unacceptable for a NED to say, “I can’t read a balance sheet,” why is it still acceptable to say, “I don’t get tech”?
Organisations need genuine insight into which leaders can engage with technological change at a strategic level and which cannot.
